Abstract

This study aims to improve the early reading skills of second-grade students at SDN 219/II BTN Lintas Asri through the global method supported by letter card media. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 20 students, comprising 11 boys and 9 girls. Data were collected through teacher activity observations, student activity observations, and early reading tests, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results indicate significant improvements in three aspects. Teacher activity increased from 65.38% in cycle I (poor category) to 88.45% in cycle II (good category). Student activity rose from 45.00% in cycle I (poor category) to 77.50% in cycle II (fair category). Students’ early reading skills also improved, as reflected in the mastery learning percentage, which increased from 60.00% in cycle I to 95.00% in cycle II. In conclusion, the global method assisted by letter card media proved effective in enhancing early reading skills of elementary students. This study suggests that teachers should creatively employ appropriate methods and simple media to support the development of students’ basic literacy.
