Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to improve the early reading skills of second-grade students at SDN 90/II Muara Bungo through the implementation of the SAS (Structural Analytic Synthetic) method combined with Alphabet cards as learning media. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 22 students. Data were collected through teacher observation sheets, student observation sheets, and reading skill tests. The findings revealed a significant improvement. Teacher activity increased from 76.65% in the first cycle (good category) to 90.60% in the second cycle (very good category). Student activity rose from 63.60% in the first cycle (fair category) to 86.30% in the second cycle (good category). Students’ reading achievement also improved, with mastery learning increasing from 54.50% in the first cycle to 90.90% in the second cycle. Therefore, the application of the SAS method with Alphabet cards is proven effective in enhancing students’ early reading skills. This study is expected to serve as a practical reference for teachers in developing literacy learning strategies in elementary schools.
