Peningkatan Membaca Permulaan melalui Spelling Method dengan Media Pop Up Book

Early reading ability is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in supporting students’ learning at the elementary level. However, preliminary observations indicated that the second-grade students of SDN 197/II Pulau Pekan, Bungo Dani District, Bungo Regency still faced difficulties in reading simple words and sentences. This study aims to describe the improvement of the learning process and students’ early reading skills through the implementation of the spelling method assisted by pop-up book media. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design using the Kemmis & McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles with two meetings in each cycle. Data were collected through teacher observation sheets, student observation sheets, and early reading tests, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive and quantitative techniques. The results showed a significant improvement: teacher activities increased from 60% (fair) in the first cycle to 93% (excellent) in the second cycle, student activities improved from 47% (poor) to 88% (excellent), and students’ average reading scores rose from 65 (fair) to 82 (very good). Thus, the spelling method combined with pop-up book media proved effective in enhancing early reading skills as well as creating a more engaging, participatory, and meaningful learning experience for elementary school students.
